no show at edsa

“I don’t understand why the President is not here. Everyone should be here and give respect,”

“We must see EDSA no longer as a people power revolution to force out a nonperforming, abusive, or corrupt head of government or regime, but what must be remembered and honored and given respect by every Filipino is the spirit of EDSA,” - Fidel Ramos

malaya spot:

the historic edsa revolt has placed the philippines as a nation in the map as the asian country that changed a nation through a peaceful revolution. that historic event identifies us as a nation ready to act as one against abuses, against the freedom of men.

this event happened 23 years ago. and it seemed that this episode can easily be replaced and is seemed to be less important than a job fair where the Phil. president attended to. true as it may be that the problem on unemployment is a crucial concern that needs to be responded to but considering this fair rather than attending this celebration once a year is not fair. the very roots of this nation is founded on a continious struggle for freedom. that is edsa people power.

23 years may have passed but the spirit that enveloped the nation 23 years ago is significant especially in times where the same institution (govenrment) seemed to be the same source of depression among those seeking for freedom and equality. this is much significant.

for we would not be in the same ground where we are standing right now if it were not for this monumental event.

ub student leaders attends paasa

five members of the ssc and 6 others from various sangguniang barangays will be attending the interactive youth forum entitled "heroic citizenship: a call for youth heroes" on February 27-28, 2009 at the university of the east, c.m. recto, manila.

gerald duagan, romnick del rosario, wendy victoria, bethany magno and rricky sison were sent by the ssc. girlie fe deliso, adrian fernandez, mariecris tilos, george estabillo to name a few were sent by their respective sangguniang barangays.

this is the first time that the administration supported this number of delegates to be sent outside baguio.

malaya spot:

we have attended the pacsa convention last year and as observed, the convention was more focused on the election of pacsa officers rather than responding to the objective of building unity and responsible leadership among student leaders. we were not even socialized to other schools. if there were, it did not last.

anyway, i hope paasa would really be a young leaders forum and not a mere assembly of students.

at the end of the forum we should be able to:
1. assess the current leadership situation in the country.
2. formulate a leadership profile that may be used as a guide for choosing future leaders in the country.
3. establish an effective network that will promote heroic leadership and citizenship

conviction in action! let these objectives be attained.

UB stude is highest individual pointer in Luzonwide Presscon

no to tuition fee increase!

the month of february is also the month for schools to post their intention to increase in school fees.

almost 150 schools in manila and hundreds of schools nationwide are to increase their school fees for the next school year.

it may be true that schools are affected by the global financial crisis but taking that as an excuse to increase the school fees does create nuance on how to view education in the philippines and how it is right now. it transforms into a perception that education becomes a privilege and not a right. education is a basic social need of a community and a tool against poverty especially among the low earning or non earning families.

a mother who struggles to sell her catched fish just to sustain the needs of the family and send his son in school.

a working student in the city who dreams of finishing his studies and help his family in the province.

these are the people whose dreams will be compromised in a depreciating educational system flocked by elites whose ambition is to earn more out of the crumbling dreams of those in need.

almost every year we hear news of schools increasing their fees.
and in those years we failed to listen to people's dream falling.

ombudsman merceditas' struggle

the fertilizer fund scam.
the world bank black list report.
the corruption from malacanyang.

malaya spot:

the senate blue ribbon committee conducted its own investigation as to the alleged anomalies and corruption that occured in the construction of infrastructure projects supported by funds coming from the world bank. the arrow points to FG arroyo as always.

the senate last year also called for an investigation regarding the fertilizer fund scam, pinning jocjoc bolante as the architect of the said scandal. further, the scam is also connected to the palace as there seems to be a relation to the 2007 elections. the arrow does not point to the first gentleman, instead to the president.

these are the issues that promted legislators to call the attention of the ombudsman. apparently, its not to submit the reports but to call for her resignation due to her inability to effeciently and effectively respond to the cases. the ombudsman is an official appointed by the president. aside from that, the ombudsman is also a classmate of first gentleman mike arroyo.

it is in this picture that some people derive the perception that the ombudsman is doing nothing to resolve the issue thereby concluding that she is protecting the persons in the palace from facing prosecution.

the ombudsman responded. the fertilizer fund scam is not an ordinary case to resolve. the setting is different for in order to launch a strong case against those responsible, there should also be a strong evidence to substatntiate the claim unlike in the senate where investigations and inquiries including the reports drawn from such procedure does not merit or imply or mean that there is already strong evidence. the procedures in the legislative branck concerning investigations is in aid of legislation.

it may be.

i may not yet be a lawyer but i believe that this performance of the ombudsman creates a cloud of doubt as to the integrity of the institution supposedly the first office to respond and come up with an action against public officials. the ombudsman need not to resign. she just have to act with independence and credibility.

ash wednesday

Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance and it marks the beginning of Lent. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent's way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. An ancient example of one expressing one's penitence is found in Job 42:3-6. Job says to God: "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes." (vv. 5-6, KJV) Other examples are found in several other books of the Bible including, Numbers 19:9, 19:17, Jonah 3:6, Matthew 11:21, and Luke 10:13, and Hebrews 9:13.
However, some Adventists who do not celebrate Ash Wednesday say that the practice is not consistent with Scripture and is of pagan origin.[13] They usually cite Matthew 6:16–18, where Jesus gave prescriptions for fasting: "And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you." (NRSV) These groups argue that Jesus warned against fasting to gain favor from other people and that he also warned his followers that they should fast in private, not letting others know they were fasting. For these reasons, some Christian denominations do not endorse the practice. Others, however, point out that this very passage from Matthew is the one, not coincidentally, that is appointed by the Revised Common Lectionary to be read on Ash Wednesday. They might also clarify that the ashen Cross on the forehead does not represent the fast, but the mortal (fallen) condition of human existence. And they would refer to Jesus' words whereby he expected people to repent using sackcloth and ashes: "Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes." (Luke 10:13; see also Matthew 11:21).

Obama vows to lead US from dire 'day of reckoning'

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama promised a nation shuddering in economic crisis Tuesday night that he would lead it from a dire "day of reckoning" to a brighter future, summoning politicians and public alike to shoulder responsibility for hard choices and shared sacrifice. "The time to take charge of our future is here," Obama declared, delivering his first address to a joint session of Congress.
Offering words of reassurance to an anxious nation, he declared, "Tonight I want every American to know this: We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before."
"We are a nation that has seen promise and peril," he said. "Now we must be that nation again."
Cheered robustly as he entered the House chamber, Obama grinned, shook hands and kissed lawmakers and stopped for a lengthy embrace with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, back on the bench only this week after surgery for pancreatic cancer.
To deal with the current crisis, deepening each day, the president said more money will be needed to rescue troubled banks beyond the $700 billion already committed last year. He said he knows that bailout billions for banks are unpopular — "I promise you, I get it," he said — but he also insisted that was the only way to get credit moving again to households and businesses, the lifeblood of the American economy.
Along with aid for banks, he also called on Congress to move quickly on legislation to overhaul outdated regulations on the nation's financial markets.
"I ask this Congress to join me in doing whatever proves necessary," Obama said. "Because we cannot consign our nation to an open-ended recession."
Thinking longer-term, Obama said in a speech lacking many specifics and devoid of initiatives that both political parties must give up favored programs while uniting behind his campaign promises to build better schools, expand health care coverage and move the nation to "greener" fuel use.
Just five weeks after his inauguration, Obama addressed an ebullient Democratic congressional majority and an embattled but reinvigorated GOP minority as well as millions of anxious viewers. Despite the nation's economic worries and the lack of support for his plans from all but a few Republican lawmakers, Obama enjoys strong approval ratings across the nation.
Louisiana's young, charismatic governor, Bobby Jindal, delivering the televised GOP response, exhorted fellow Republicans to be Obama's "strongest partners" when they agree with him. But he signaled that won't happen much, calling Democrats in Congress "irresponsible" for passing the $787 billion stimulus package that Republicans have criticized as excessive and wasteful.
"The way to lead is not to raise taxes and put more money and power in hands of Washington politicians," Jindal said, according to excerpts of his remarks released by the Republican Party. "Who among us would ask our children for a loan, so we could spend money we do not have, on things we do not need?"
Jindal is considered a likely presidential contender in 2012.
Obama spoke as bad economic news continued to pile up, felt all too keenly in U.S. homes and businesses. Some 3.6 million jobs have disappeared so far in the deepening recession, which now ranks as the biggest job destroyer in the post-World War II period. Americans have lost trillions of dollars in retirement, college and savings accounts, with the stock market falling nearly half from its peak of 16 months ago.
And new polls — some with his public support rising and others with it dropping — show that the political climate can be as precarious as the economic one. Aware that his and his party's fortunes will suffer if he cannot right the economic picture, Obama sought to blend the kind of grim honesty that has become his trademark since taking office with a greater emphasis on optimism.
"The weight of this crisis will not determine the destiny of this nation," he said.
The central argument of his speech was that his still-unfolding economic revival plan has room for — and even demands — simultaneous action on a broad, expensive agenda including helping the millions without health insurance, improving education and switching the U.S. to greater dependence on alternative energy sources. This is the big lift of his young presidency: bringing the public behind what are sure to be enormous outlays on contentious issues.
His hope was to begin to persuade the country that those longer-term items on his presidential agenda are as important to the nation's economic well-being as unchoking credit and turning around unemployment numbers.
"The only way this century will be another American century is if we confront at last the price of our dependence on oil and the high cost of health care, the schools that aren't preparing our children and the mountain of debt they stand to inherit," Obama said. "That is our responsibility."
He urged lawmakers to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases that cause climate change by creating a cap-and-trade system of limits and pollution allowances, especially for industries such as utilities with coal burning power plants. And he said the budget he is sending to Congress on Thursday will call for $15 billion a year in federal spending to spur development of environmentally friendly but so far cost-ineffective energy sources such as wind and solar, biofuels, clean coal and more fuel-efficient vehicles.
He said his budget request also will create new incentives for teacher performance and support for innovative education programs. He asked every American to commit to completing a year or more of higher education or career training.
New in office, he wasn't charged with producing a formal State of the Union status report. But for all intents and purposes, that's what it was: a night for the president to sketch out his priorities in a setting unmatched the rest of the year.
It took nearly 15 minutes for him to make his way through a House chamber packed with lawmakers eager to welcome the nation's first black president into a Capitol built by slaves. The gallery included a special section hosted by first lady Michelle Obama in which guests were selected to serve as living symbols of the president's goals. Cramming the floor was virtually the entire leadership of the federal government, including Supreme Court justices and all but one Cabinet member, held away in case disaster struck.
Pre-speech, Wall Street was in a better mood than it had been in for days: Stocks were up after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the recession might end this year.
In contrast to many State of the Union addresses by George W. Bush, Obama did not emphasize foreign policy. He touched on his intention to chart new strategies in Iraq and Afghanistan and to forge a new image for the U.S. around the world even as he keeps up the fight against terrorism.
With the economy dominant, Obama said the mess was one he inherited. "We have lived through an era where too often, short-term gains were prized over long-term prosperity, where we failed to look beyond the next payment, the next quarter or the next election," he said.
He aimed to show he was tackling the situation with both urgency and strict oversight for how the staggering sums are being spent. The massive stimulus plan, an overhaul of the separate $700 billion bailout for the financial sector, and a $275 billion rescue for struggling homeowners are already in place, and more is on the way, Obama said.
Even as Washington pours money into the economic recovery, Obama said the budget deficit, at $1.3 trillion and ballooning, must be brought under control.
He promised he would slash it by half by the end of his term in 2013, mostly by ending U.S. combat in Iraq and eliminating some of Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy. He said his budget officials have identified a total of $2 trillion in savings over the next 10 years, also including ending education programs "that don't work" and payments to large agribusinesses "that don't need them," eliminating wasteful no-bid contracts in Iraq and spending on weapons systems no longer needed in the post-Cold War era, and rooting out waste in Medicare.
"Everyone in this chamber, Democrats and Republicans, will have to sacrifice some worthy priorities for which there are no dollars," he said. "And that includes me."
He touted his decision to end the practice of leaving Iraq and Afghanistan war spending out of the main budget. "For seven years, we have been a nation at war. No longer will we hide its price," Obama said.

palawan day 1

the plane landed.

we immediately went to see our accomodation area. i thought that the ub delegation would stay in a single room (we are 5) only to find out that ub delegates would be separated, anyway, go pa rin.

the event already started when we arrived, fortunately my event will be held in the afternoon at around 3pm so i barely have atleast 3 hours to rest and prepare my self for the competition. we arrived at puerto princesa at around 1130.

puerto princesa is a warm place, that warm feeling however is not that similar to warm places like the ncr, dagupan or tarlac. in palawan, though its war, you easily dont feel the sticky feeling of sweating. i believe this is due to the natural environment that envelopes the city. in its nearby towns, its embraced by an all green atmosphere. one thing i observed in puerto princesa is the discipline and strict implementation on the policies on cleanliness. across the roads and corners of the city you can see a trash can. throwing or scattering litters would make you pay a fine of 200 pesos. no wonder scattering is a no-no in the city.

its 3pm. from circon inn (where we stayed), i wlaked across the city to ardent hotel where the competition on opinion writing (english) is held. as i entered the hall, i saw a seroius atmosphere. as my eyes slowly scanned the area hoping to find some one i know, i noticed every one was busy reading papers, texting while some are outside chatting with their team mates.

the competition began. i suppose the organizers forgot that i dont have a kit to use during the event. gladly, there are friendly competitors who lend me a pieceof paper. the event started. every one was surprised to hear that the topic for opinion writing is the recent decision of the supreme court upholding the constitutionality of the visiting forcs agreement and its order to transfer smith under philippine custody. almost all participants were expecting that environmental issue would be the subject.

i immediately wrote some notes, all ideas scattered, vague and lacks direction. its all in the mind. as other participants were busy writing their articles, i struggled over gather all the chimeras in my mind, placing them in their proper station, and writing them down. then i finished my article. as i read it, its content was dominantly dramatic with a taste of choices regarding the constitutionality and beneficiality of either options.

9pm.

pasyal ng konti.

then slept.

quezon city rub out or shoot out?

Three suspected car thieves were killed in a police operation along EDSA in Quezon City Tuesday night.ABS-CBN News was able to capture on video the final minutes of the operation, which authorities said began in Mandaluyong City when police spotted and pursued a vehicle reported stolen last month.Police claimed the suspects opened fire on them forcing them to fire back. But the footage captured by ABS-CBN shows several policemen firing their weapons inside the suspects' car at close range. The footage was shown to Human Rights Commissioner Leila de Lima, who said the police violated rules of engagement."Jesus Christ!...This is very disturbing and highly questionable in our viewpoint," de Lima said after seeing the footage."This is potentially a case of excessive and blatant violation of operational guidelines," she added. "Ano na nangyari sa mga human rights education and training namin all these years for the PNP?"As of posting, Quezon City police district deputy director for operations Federico Lasiste said they have yet to see the footage.Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno said it will take several weeks for forensic investigations to be completed, but he stressed it was a legitimate encounter.Meanwhile, the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) will investigate last night's shootout amid allegations it was a rubout."Hindi dapat na mangyari na ang mga tao na nakasakay sa isang kotse, kung yan man ay nanlalaban o ano man ay papuputukan ng point blank na ang ibig sabihin ay hindi lumalaban yung mga nasa loob," said Eduardo Escueta, vice-chairman of the NAPOLCOM, after seeing the footage."Hindi maganda ang ating nakita diyan at umpisa pa lang ay maari nating sabihin na hindi ito dapat ginawa ng police officer," he said.

malaya spot:

the pnp's duty as seen in almost all papers is to serve and protect. but with this issue, there seems to be a cloud of doubt as to how the police interprets and realizes this objective. the victims may be criminals guilty of inflicting disorder in the society but this does not fully justify the kind of treatment they got from the police operatives. in a nation that struggles in every step to attain the real spirit of democracy, the failure to observe the proper treatment of a suspect is relative to the failure to pursue the right direction to real democracy.

it could be that we're lost.
im excited.

this is the emotion i felt when our proposal to represent our university in the luzonwide press conference was finally approved. But there exists a more delicate concern which may prejudice our travel to palawan. we have'nt reserved yet for our flight going to palawan and back home and we barely have 3 days before our scheduled event.alas! there are no available and practical flight going to palawan.

strategy.

instead of going there as a group, we decided to travel there by batch to accomodate the available schedule of the plane. there are no available flights back to manila so we grabbed the lowest rate available in super ferry, its pegged at 1500 for the mega value class. its almost the same with the economy class rate.comfort.all things are prepared from the budget, to the reservations and documents needed except our personal 'things'.a few hours from our scheduled trip to manila, i went home, packed my things (i almost packed all my shirts..im anticipating an adventurous episode in palawan, hehe) and went back to school.there i met my co-officers and had a dinner with them.

the time is 10:40pm.

the bus starts the engine. passengers began entering. a few minutes later, then a few hours passed, we found ourselves at manila.its 4 early morning. the capital is a busy place and its also a place where vigilance is necessary especially when your not that familiar with the place. we stayed at pasay bus station until 5am then went to mcdonalds for a breakfast.

6:30am.

we're at the ninoy aquino international airport terminal 3. the place is a tough area especially for the first timers like us, its also a cool place to discover things adding it to experience. our flight is scheduled at 9:20. its almost 10 when we finally departed manila.high. higher!it's my first time to ride a plane and its an experience which offered my a sense of being high. the moment the plane started to run, the beat of excitement becomes strong. as the plane takes off from the ground, the beat becomes stronger. the feeling of seeing yourself riding a plane brings back the childhood dreams of a super hero and it tickles the senses existing in your childhood dimension. while at the plane i struggled over surpassing the point of sleeping with the desire to expereince the feeling of flying and without missing any detail which may add up to that childhood masterpiece.. the plane flew from manila to puerto princesa for about an hour yet it seemed to me like it just existed for a few minutes.

the plane landed.

palawan experience

a few hours from now, we'll be leaving puerto princesa city, palawan. For the past five days, it's not just the press conference (which we attended to) that entertained me rather the excitement that out of the warm temperature in this place springs out the cool feeling of seeing the scene that once entertained you in the computer, the cool feeling of touching the sand, the water or probably the rocks that were once limited only to your imagination and the feeling of feeling yourself to be in a place you once or just saw in the the two-dimensional world of virtual reality. For the past five days, the feeling was oppresingly great. I thought i could just see the underground river in the realm of the internet, but it is more amazing to be at the same place your thought has imagined.Ah, it's 12:24AM!. We're staying at circon lodge. Its a nice place that offers you good bed, good service and good food. hindi kasi ako makatulog kaya naisipan kong magblog.I'm starting to get sleepy. i'll update you about my experience from our first and last day in palawan when i come back to baguio on monday.
