Cris Byron Pacio, one of the highest individual pointers in the regional press conference got the same award in the Luzonwide Higher Education press Conference held in Puerto Princesa, Palawan on February 11-14, 2009.
Beating other student-writers from six regions, Pacio was first in feature and editorial writing, and second in poetry writing all in Filipino category.
Meanwhile, Gerald Duagan, also a regional winner landed as first in opinion writing, English category.
Pacio and Duagan are graduating students of AB Political Science this March.
Other delegates from the institution were Reuben John Rivero who got the first place in comic strip English and fourth place in literary graphics English in the regional presscon and Lorenzo Tacadao, first in editorial writing English and opinion writing Filipino, also a highest individual pointer in CAR.

no to tuition fee increase!
the month of february is also the month for schools to post their intention to increase in school fees.
almost 150 schools in manila and hundreds of schools nationwide are to increase their school fees for the next school year.
it may be true that schools are affected by the global financial crisis but taking that as an excuse to increase the school fees does create nuance on how to view education in the philippines and how it is right now. it transforms into a perception that education becomes a privilege and not a right. education is a basic social need of a community and a tool against poverty especially among the low earning or non earning families.
a mother who struggles to sell her catched fish just to sustain the needs of the family and send his son in school.
a working student in the city who dreams of finishing his studies and help his family in the province.
these are the people whose dreams will be compromised in a depreciating educational system flocked by elites whose ambition is to earn more out of the crumbling dreams of those in need.

the senate last year also called for an investigation regarding the fertilizer fund scam, pinning jocjoc bolante as the architect of the said scandal. further, the scam is also connected to the palace as there seems to be a relation to the 2007 elections. the arrow does not point to the first gentleman, instead to the president.
these are the issues that promted legislators to call the attention of the ombudsman. apparently, its not to submit the reports but to call for her resignation due to her inability to effeciently and effectively respond to the cases. the ombudsman is an official appointed by the president. aside from that, the ombudsman is also a classmate of first gentleman mike arroyo.
it is in this picture that some people derive the perception that the ombudsman is doing nothing to resolve the issue thereby concluding that she is protecting the persons in the palace from facing prosecution.
the ombudsman responded. the fertilizer fund scam is not an ordinary case to resolve. the setting is different for in order to launch a strong case against those responsible, there should also be a strong evidence to substatntiate the claim unlike in the senate where investigations and inquiries including the reports drawn from such procedure does not merit or imply or mean that there is already strong evidence. the procedures in the legislative branck concerning investigations is in aid of legislation.

i may not yet be a lawyer but i believe that this performance of the ombudsman creates a cloud of doubt as to the integrity of the institution supposedly the first office to respond and come up with an action against public officials. the ombudsman need not to resign. she just have to act with independence and credibility.

Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance and it marks the beginning of Lent. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent's way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. An ancient example of one expressing one's penitence is found in Job 42:3-6. Job says to God: "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes." (vv. 5-6, KJV) Other examples are found in several other books of the Bible including, Numbers 19:9, 19:17, Jonah 3:6, Matthew 11:21, and Luke 10:13, and Hebrews 9:13.
However, some Adventists who do not celebrate Ash Wednesday say that the practice is not consistent with Scripture and is of pagan origin.[13] They usually cite Matthew 6:16–18, where Jesus gave prescriptions for fasting: "And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you." (NRSV) These groups argue that Jesus warned against fasting to gain favor from other people and that he also warned his followers that they should fast in private, not letting others know they were fasting. For these reasons, some Christian denominations do not endorse the practice. Others, however, point out that this very passage from Matthew is the one, not coincidentally, that is appointed by the Revised Common Lectionary to be read on Ash Wednesday. They might also clarify that the ashen Cross on the forehead does not represent the fast, but the mortal (fallen) condition of human existence.
